AMD Stock Erupts After Pre-FOMC OpenAI Deal: Is There a Computing Power War Coming For Crypto?

OpenAI has inked a multiyear deal with AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) for six gigawatts of GPU capacity to power its next generation of AI models. It’s a mic drop moment. The agreement, unveiled Monday, could deliver tens of billions in revenue over five years, marking AMD’s biggest step yet toward challenging Nvidia’s dominance in AI chips.

According to FRED data, semiconductor manufacturing output in the United States rose +18.6% year-over-year as of Q3 2025, driven almost entirely by AI chip demand.

Moreover, DeFi Llama notes that blockchain-based cloud computing projects like Render and Akash Network have seen a +30% TVL surge in the same period, reflecting that decentralized compute alternatives are surging with the AI race.

The AMD deal comes just one week after OpenAI signed separate agreements with Samsung and SK Hynix to secure high-bandwidth memory chips, and a month after Oracle’s +35% stock jump on news of a new AI server contract with OpenAI. Combined, the moves signal a deliberate strategy to diversify beyond Nvidia.

“OpenAI’s move to balance supply between AMD, Nvidia, and Asian partners is smart risk management,” said a semiconductor strategist at Baird.
