Armed Attorneys Leslie Cross and Richard Hayes break down a bizarre new question: What happens when your driverless car detects a gun and calls the police?
Two juveniles were riding in a Waymo in San Francisco when the company says it detected a firearm-related violation, stopped the vehicle, and contacted emergency services. Police conducted a high-risk stop and reportedly recovered a loaded AR-style “ghost gun,” suspected marijuana, and mace.
Leslie and Richard discuss how Waymo may detect what is happening inside the vehicle, what privacy passengers should expect, and where private company rules meet constitutional rights.
They also make an important distinction: violating Waymo’s firearm policy does not automatically mean you committed a gun crime. A private company can restrict firearms in its vehicles, while the legality of possessing that firearm is a separate question.
And if an automated system alerts police, what does law enforcement need to establish reasonable suspicion? Who becomes the witness when the original information came from a computer?
