UFC 317 weigh-in results: Ilia Topuria set for title fight despite strange commission error

Ilia Topuria’s return to the lightweight division hit the slightest of snags.

The former featherweight champion was first to step to the scale Friday morning for the UFC 317 official weigh-ins and he looked confident he would hit the 155-pound limit with ease. However, when Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Jeff Mullen read off his weight, he initially announced Topuria at 155.5 pounds, which is over the limit for a lightweight title fight.

No one seemed to react at first and Topuria did a traditional post-weigh-in flex, but then he was asked not to step off the scale. Mullen returned to the scale, adjusted it, and then said, “155, I misspoke.”

Shortly after, Saturday’s lightweight championship main event became official as Charles Oliveira also successfully made weight, coming in a shade under at 154.5 pounds. Topuria and Oliveira vie for a belt left vacant by No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Islam Makhachev, who is set to move up to welterweight to fight titleholder Jack Della Maddalena.

Backup Arman Tsarukyan also successfully made weight, coming in at 155 pounds.

For the co-main event, flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja and challenger Kai Kara-France both hit the mark at 125 pounds.

There was one major change announced at Friday’s official weigh-ins as a bout between Christopher Ewert and Jackson McVey has been cancelled from the preliminary portion of the card. Ewert was stepping in on less than a week’s notice for Sedriques Dumas, but at the start of the morning weigh-ins, officials announced Ewert was removed from the bout due to weight-cutting issues.
