Vitor Hugo and Gabrieli Pessanha shined Sunday, each claiming double gold at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation World Championships in Long Beach, Calif. Both did it in style, submitting their way to the titles. Hugo claimed his third straight world championship at 100+ kg submitting Marcus Ribeiro in the finals. He then turned around and captured the absolute division knee barring 100 kg winner Erich Munis for the title.
Pessanha, too, was dominant submitting all her opponents in winning the women’s 80+ kg title and the ladies’ absolute division. This marked the third straight world championships where Pessanha won both her weight class and the open title, a record for women.
Also of note was Mayssa Bastos, who captured her fourth straight women’s 48 kg title, Amy Campo, the lone America to take gold in the women’s 74 kg class and the return of Wellington “Megaton” Dias at the age of 55. Dias, who is better known these days as the father of UFC contender Mackenzie Dern, took a silver at the worlds way back in 1996. Though he lost in the first round this year, he became the first BJJ coral belt (seventh degree black belt) to ever compete at the world championships.
