Superbon Singha Mawynn wants his ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Championship back over his shoulder, but the first step back on the road to the title begins on June 9 at ONE Fight Night 11 against Tayfun Ozcan.
The former featherweight king admitted that he may have underestimated Chingiz Allazov in their title tilt. However, after suffering a knockout loss, he has vowed not to do it again.
Superbon has been training nearly every day for the past five months to get back to the global stage and start his hunt once more.
“Athletes can lose. But when you lose, you must recover yourself and get back to fighting as quickly as possible. And, it is an important responsibility to prove that you can do better next time,” Superbon told ONE Championship.
One of the driving forces behind Superbon’s return is competing inside Lumpinee Boxing Stadium once again. With such history held between its walls, the Thai star is excited to return for the first time since ONE began its weekly ONE Friday Fights event series from the famed venue.
“In fact, I’ve never fought in the new Lumpinee stadium before. I used to fight only at the old Lumpinee because I moved to fight overseas before the stadium was moved to the current location. You can say this is my first fight at the new Lumpinee,” Superbon said.
“Lumpinee is an iconic stadium in Muay Thai history for a long time. This place is like a Mecca of Muay Thai, no matter where it’s located, especially when it was refurbished by ONE Championship. It made the place look more splendid than ever.”
Those exciting matches inside Lumpinee Boxing Stadium have even sparked the 32-year-old’s imagination. The former featherweight titleholder is planning on bringing a few new tools with him once he steps between the ropes on June 9.
“In my training for the upcoming fight, I have practiced new techniques to utilize them in the ring. If you watch ONE Lumpinee, you will see that many fighters perform many unique Muay Thai techniques which work effectively, like flying knees then switching to high kicks. And I intend to use those techniques in my fight as well,” the former ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Champion stated.
And Superbon may need every tool in his arsenal if he plans to defeat Ozcan at ONE Fight Night 11. The #5-ranked contender in the division is the only athlete in the rankings who Superbon has not faced. The new challenge will push Superbon and give him a clear path to another shot at the gold.
After breaking down Ozcan’s talents, Superbon is clear he needs to be on point against the hungry contender.
“I can’t be careless because he has heavy and sharp hands. He also has a high fight IQ. He studied me when I was fighting Marat [Grigorian]. I believe he would try to do the same in this fight. He has shown in his fight against Sittichai and Marat that he was able to adjust himself to the changing situations very well,” Superbon detailed.
“Some fighters don’t know how to adapt. You can see that some are good at left kicks, they will throw only left kicks all the time. But that’s not the case for Tayfun. He can change to left punch, right punch, right or left kick. And this gives his opponent a hard time predicting his move. If I fight him, I can’t lose my focus for a second.”
That laser focus has Superbon locked in for ONE Fight Night 9.
The Thai superstar believes his need to get back to the top of the mountain gives him the edge against Ozcan. For Superbon, he plans to end the match before the judges can get involved and make it clear he is the top contender for the title.
“I have more motivation than him this time. I want to take back the belt and defeat everyone in the rankings. And [the] most important thing is that I can’t lose again. It’s a point of no return for me. If I lose, everything I’ve done until now will fall apart in the blink of an eye,” Superbon said.
“I think we will be even in the first round, but in the second round, I’ll probably throw weapons more often and more violently. And one of my attacks may knock him out in round two or three.”
ONE Fight Night 11 airs live on June 9 on Prime Video. The event begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and is free for all Amazon Prime members in the U.S. and Canada.
