Robinhood Markets Inc. is taking a bold cue from its namesake legend and is returning financial power to the people, one trade at a time.

The company has decided to give retail traders access to private companies before they go public, in an effort to bolster retail participation in markets that institutional players have dominated up to this point.

In a press release dated 15 September 2025, Robinhood Markets Inc. unveiled RVI (Robinhood Ventures Fund) to the world. The RVI is a closed-ended fund and has filed for registration with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Robinhood announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Robinhood Ventures DE LLC, will manage the fund.

The RVI fund is designed to open the gates of private equity and allow retail traders to access tech firms long before they go public.

Elaborating on the development, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said, “For decades, wealthy people and institutions have invested in private companies while retail investors have been unfairly locked out.”

Further, he stated, “With Robinhood Ventures, everyday people will be able to invest in opportunities once reserved for the elite.”

The market dynamics in the US are in a churn. In the last two decades, publicly listed companies have plummeted from 7000 in 2000 to just 4000 today. Meanwhile, the private market has surged in both size and significance.

By launching its publicly traded fund, Robinhood aims to close the access gap, allowing everyday traders to access a segment of the economy that institutions and the ultra-wealthy had sectioned off for the longest time.

Could Long-Term Exposure To Frontier Companies Be Retail’s New Growth Engine?

The fund’s mechanism allows it to focus on a portfolio of private companies positioned at the cutting edge of their respective industry, otherwise known as “frontier companies.”

Investors are meant to park their investments over prolonged periods, including IPO events and beyond, which provides sustained exposure to high-growth firms at an early stage.

This is precisely what Robinhood did in the European market, introducing tokenised private stocks earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Robinhood has emphasised that the fund’s structure complies with public market regulations while unlocking opportunities for retail investors.

The RVI fund announcement lands as Robinhood rides a wave of strong momentum. The addition of Robinhood to the S&P 500 index sent its stock soaring in the after-hours trading.
