Major Air Show Permanently Moves Away from RAF Fairford

The Royal International Air Tattoo, one of the world’s biggest annual air shows, will permanently move from its longtime home of RAF Fairford, a longtime base for the U.S. Air Force, to a different military installation in the United Kingdom, its organizers announced Nov. 4.

The shift from RAF Fairford, which hosted the event for 40 years, comes after the 2026 edition of the air show, scheduled for July, was canceled months in advance after U.S. bombers were deployed there for operations against Iran. A suspected Iranian plot led the U.S. to evacuate its bombers from the base last month.

The show’s new home will be MOD Boscombe Down, roughly 45 miles south of Fairford, in Wiltshire in southwest England. The first RIAT at the new location will be July 16-18, 2027.

The move to Boscombe Down “provides a strong platform for the continued growth, development, and long-term success of the world’s largest military air show,” Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, the show’s organizer, said in a Nov. 4 statement. “MOD Boscombe Down provides an outstanding platform for RIAT’s future ambitions, offering the space, capability, and flexibility required to support the event’s continued evolution.

MOD Boscombe Down is the U.K.’s home for military aircraft testing and evaluation. Unlike RAF Fairford, there is no operational U.S. Air Force presence there.

Over the last decade, RIAT has evolved from a public air show into a more prominent event for defense industry and governments, often hosting high-level meetings and announcements that previously took place at the biennial Farnborough Airshow in the U.K. or the Paris Air Show in France.

The U.S. has long used the Fairford base to host bombers and other specialized aircraft based in Europe.

During the height of this spring’s Operation Epic Fury, the base housed around two dozen B-1B Lancers and B-52H Stratofortresses. The forward-deployed location enabled a high volume of U.S. airstrikes against targets in Iran. The U.K. government had given the U.S. permission to use the base for what the British government categorized as defensive strikes against Iran.

But further security concerns were raised when the 12 B-1Bs that remained hastily departed the base on Oct. 4. Their departure followed what U.S. and U.K. officials have said was likely an Iranian-backed plot to target the base.

U.K. government officials, including U.K. ministers and the head of the RAF, signaled their support for the new arrangement in statements released alongside the announcement.

“I’m delighted it has a new home at MOD Boscombe Down, a site with a proud history in aviation and innovation,” Minister for Defense Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard said of RIAT.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth said in a statement the RAF would support “future editions of RIAT for many years to come.”

“This move secures the future of the airshow for decades into the future and enables the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust’s important work to continue inspiring future generations,” Smyth added.

The RIAT traditionally has a heavy U.S. presence. Its organizers, who will continue to be based at Fairford, thanked the U.S. Air Force for their support of the show there.

A spokesperson for U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa, which oversees the USAF in the U.K., said the command is “aware of and respects” the decision to move the show away from Fairford.

“We continue to work closely with our U.K. allies and look forward to remaining a key partner at RIAT,” the USAFE-AFA spokesperson added.
