Space Force Activates Component Under Special Operations Command

The Space Force has officially established its component to U.S. Special Operations Command, creating a ninth component charged with presenting space expertise to commanders in the field.

The service activated the component Oct. 7, according to a Sept. 29 memo confirmed to be authentic by Air & Space Forces Magazine, and it plans to hold a formal ceremony in the coming weeks. The Space Force has had a special forces element operating at SOCOM headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., but not a formal component field command.

The announcement comes more than 18 months after U.S. Special Operations Command revealed plans to create a space component. Congress pressed pause on that process in the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, blocking funding for the move until the Space Force provided more details on its plans.

A Space Force spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about who would lead the component or provide details on its organizational structure. Axios first reported on the activation.

Space capabilities and forces have played a critical role in recent operations, according to senior defense officials. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine identified space forces as a “first mover” during the early days of Operation Epic Fury. And in a speech last month at AFA’s Air, Space & Cyber conference, Chief of Space Operations Gen. Douglas Schiess highlighted electronic warfare operations performed by Guardians deployed with the Space Force’s 42nd Electronic Warfare Detachment, which supports U.S. Central Command and Space Forces Central.

Standing up components under every unified combatant command has been a focus of the Space Force since its establishment in 2019. Along with Space Forces Special Operations, or SPACEFOR-SOC, the service has component field commands within U.S. Northern Command, Southern Command, Pacific Command, Space Command, and Central Command. It also has a combined component for European Command and Africa Command, and sub-unified components in Japan and Korea.

As the Space Force looks to more than double its number of uniformed Guardians over the next five years—increasing its ranks from about 11,000 to 25,000 by fiscal 2031—officials have said the size of its component organizations must increase to meet operational demand.

“As we walked forward and stood up U.S. Space Force components—now with almost every combatant command around the planet—each one of those was sized to get off the ground and start doing the integrated work that we’ve seen,” Lt. Gen. Dennis Bythewood, commander of U.S. Space Forces-Space, the service’s SPACECOM component, told reporters in March. “But we already see that in stressing times, we’re having to surge people forward.”

To support future surge needs, Bythewood said at the time, components must grow to make sure that Guardian deployments don’t disrupt regular operations. He noted that his component has growth plans “already laid in” over the next few years.
