The FBI arrested a CIA contractor Friday for allegedly leaking highly classified national defense information to a romantic partner who operated an online publication known for publishing sensitive government intelligence.

Ian A. Brinksman, 42, of Washington, D.C., faces federal charges of unlawfully transmitting national defense information following a search of his residence.

According to a criminal complaint, Brinksman allegedly accessed sensitive intelligence outside his official responsibilities and provided it to an individual who published classified material on Substack.

Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned the alleged breach, emphasizing the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting America’s national security secrets.

“National defense information is classified to protect the American people from bad actors around the world who wish to do us harm,” Blanche said.

Brinksman began working for a federal agency in Virginia in 2020 before becoming a systems integration developer for a government contractor in 2022. He maintained a Top Secret security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information.

Federal investigators allege Brinksman shared classified information with a romantic partner who operated a Substack publication. In September, the individual reportedly acknowledged publishing stories based on classified intelligence assessments and openly solicited additional leaks.

FBI Director Kash Patel warned that individuals who exploit government security clearances will face serious consequences.

“Protecting America’s secrets is a top counterintelligence priority of this FBI,” Patel said.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed the arrest followed a referral from his agency.

“The unauthorized release of classified material poses grave risks to our national security, intelligence sources, ongoing operations, and our officers,” Ratcliffe said.

Assistant Attorney General John Eisenberg accused Brinksman of deliberately obtaining classified intelligence unrelated to his duties and passing it to someone he knew intended to publish it.

“That is not carelessness. It is a betrayal of his oath and the American people who entrusted him to fulfill his duties honorably,” Eisenberg said.

Federal prosecutors say the alleged conduct could constitute a serious violation of the Espionage Act.

The FBI’s Chicago Field Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from its Washington Field Office.
