Mark Jacobs Controversial Burmese boxing champion Dave Leduc is back in the news, apparently claiming to have been poisoned by spies from Thailand. Leduc, currently residing in Turkey, posted on Facebook Sunday that he’d been in the hospital for two days after eating at a Thai restaurant. Leduc alluded to having been banned from Thailand over insulting remarks he made about muay Thai, that Thai spies who don’t like him are in Europe and claimed the restaurant may have poisoned him. It’s unclear how serious Leduc is with his assertions.
Originally from Canada, Leduc became the first foreigner to win the openweight championship in the brutal sport of lethwei, a form of bareknuckle kickboxing native to Myanmar, back in 2016. Since then, he’s courted controversy at every turn criticizing Thai boxing, being banned by the lethwei federation in Myanmar, and coming out against COVID-19 restrictions and vaccinations. He hasn’t fought since 2020 but was scheduled to return to action against Cambodian kickboxer Prum Samnang on May 27. Though the bout fell through, Leduc has said he plans to fight Samnang in Cambodia later this year.
