Devin Haney retained the undisputed lightweight championship of the world by a controversial unanimous decision over former champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in a highly anticipated contest between two of the best boxers in the world. The bout didn’t disappoint as both men showed off top-flight boxing skills in a close battle that could have gone either way.
The opening rounds were tight as the undefeated Haney started to assert himself in the middle rounds landing wicked body punches that Lomachenko, 35, seemed to have no answer for. But the former champion, who took time off from boxing last year to fight for his home country of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, began to come on strong in the later rounds. He repeatedly snapped Haney’s head back with southpaw left hands in the ninth and dazed the champion in the 10th with a powerful combination. After suffering another rough round in the 11th, Haney gathered himself to come back in the final round helping him capture the bout on all three scorecards, though many observers had it for Lomachenko.
